Hearing/Seeing

On the occasion of the Year of Czech Music 2024, the Czech Philharmonic and the Galerie Rudolfinum, with the support of the Lunchmeat Festival, present the project “Hearing/Seeing”.

The exhibition will present 15 audiovisual works that connect the worlds of contemporary visual art with the heritage of Czech classical music.

Form

Artists will create a visual piece in response to one of five musical extracts, in a format of H.264@30 fps in a 9:16 (portrait) aspect ratio. The result will then be a fusion of both components into a resultant audiovisual work.

The artists can choose from these five extracts

  1. Smetana: Vltava (0:53)
  2. Kaprálová: Suita rustica, I. Allegro rustico (0:54)
  3. Martinů: Symphony no. 6, II. Poco Allegro (1:31)
  4. Rychlík: African Cycle, III. (2:00)
  5. Vöröšová: Lunapark, III. Shooting Range (1:59)

Selection criteria

The call is open to artists living in the Czech Republic no older than thirty-five years old at the time their proposal is submitted.

Commissioning fee

The selected artists will be paid a fee of 15 000 CZK.

How to apply

Send a concept for your audiovisual work as a storyboard or still frame (and, optionally, a referential piece of moving image; this can be a sample from an existing work), and a concept proposal for the piece (250–500 words). This text should include an explanation of the planned images, with a focused on the time-based media character of the work and an understanding of the artistic or formal connection between the audio and video components.

Delivery date for works-in-progress: 11 August 2024 (10s WIP moving image)

Selection process

A jury will select up to fifteen artists who will be invited to develop their concept into a finished piece. Artists can submit any number of works.

Presentation of the artworks

The final works will be presented on professional 4K screens with the following parameters:

  • Diagonal screen size: 55”
  • Resolution: 2160 x 3840 (4K UHD)
  • Brightness: 500nit
    Audio will be played back from closed headphones.
