The Czech Philharmonic filled New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall with the sound of Czech music. Watch the concert streamed from one of the world’s most famous halls. Under the baton of Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov, the Czech Philharmonic performs three symphonic poems from Bedřich Smetana’s iconic cycle Má vlast (My Country): Vyšehrad, Vltava and Šarka. 

Czech week at Carnegie Hall

The culmination of the 2024 Year of Czech Music is five concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s most famous stages. Returning to Carnegie Hall for the first time since 2018, the Czech Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor and Music Director, Semyon Bychkov, will perform three programmes of Czech music.

Also appearing during Czech Week at Carnegie Hall is the Prague Philharmonic Choir presenting Czech vocal works, and the Pavel Haas Quartet in chamber music by Czech composers. And that’s not all: Czech Week at Carnegie Hall will also feature a collaborative educational project with members of Czech Philharmonic's Orchestral Academy, students from London's Royal Academy of Music, and young musicians from Carnegie Hall.

Concerts

A three-evening residency at Carnegie Hall sees the Czech Philharmonic present music by Dvořák, Smetana, Mahler and Janáček. Led by Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov, the orchestra will be joined by three renowned soloists: cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Daniil Trifonov (Czech Philharmonic 129th season Artist-in-Residence). Each soloist will play a concerto by the Czech Philharmonic’s founder Antonín Dvořák.

The Prague Philharmonic Choir, under the direction of Choirmaster Lukáš Vasilík, will make New York's most famous square resound with Christmas songs.

Allegro Forte: Faces of Czech Music presents a unique set of photographic portraits depicting nearly twenty world-class classical music performers and
three important ambassadors of artistic expression - dancers. The project was created in cooperation with the Czech Philharmonic.

Film Festival at Bohemian National Hall

December 6, 7 and 8, 2024

Film Festival visitors can expect to enjoy a total of four films this December. These include the American premiere of the film Smetana directed by Marek Najbrt and two documentaries: the first about the former Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Jiří Bělohlávek and the second, dedicated to the current Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov. The festival closes with O čo ide Idě (Ida’s Idea), a film about the cooperation between the Czech Philharmonic and the Romany children's choir Čhavorenge led by Ida Kelarová.

Masterclasses with members of the Czech Philharmonic

Resnick Education Wing, Carnegie Hall, December 3 and 4, 2024

During Czech Week at Carnegie Hall, hornist Kateřina Javůrková, cellist Václav Petr, and double bassist Petr Ries will offer masterclasses showcasing performance approaches to Czech music at the highest level. Talented students from prestigious American institutions, including the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Princeton University, will participate in these masterclasses.

Love is more powerful than death

Bohemian National Hall, December 5, 2024, 6 p.m. ET

Jitka Čvančarová and Václav Marhoul, accompanied by a string quartet comprising members of the Czech Philharmonic, bring Karel Hynek Mácha's iconic poem May to life, reciting selected passages in English.
